My Vocabulary Diary

Unit 1
1.birth rates                 = the number of children who are born.
            - This year’s birth rates higher than last year.
2.life expectancy         = how long people live.
            - life expctancy in Indonesia is still very low.
3.advantages               = the quality of having a superior or more favorable position.
- The experience gave him the advantage over me.
4. pleased                    = experiencing or manifesting pleasure.
            - I could tell she was pleased about something.
5. average                    = the average amount is the amount you get when you add
together several quantities and divide this by the total      number of quantities.
-          The age of the candidates ranged from 29 to 49 with an average age of 37.

Unit 2
1.pork                          = the meat from pigs
            - My mother cooks pork fo diner.
2.pastry                       = any of various baked foods made of dough or batter.
            - special menu in our restaurant is a traditional fried pastry filled with
              vegetables and melted cheese.
3.heat                          = to make something become warm or hot 
            - Heat the milk until it boils.
4.leaflet                       = a small book or piece of paper advertising something or giving
   information on a particular subject.
            - Students were handing out election leaflets at the station.
5.occasions                  = an even that occurs at a critical time.
            - It was needed only on special occasions.
6.lamb                         = the meat of a young sheep
            - in last new year party we grilled many leg of lamb.

Unit 3
1.Realize                     = to know and understand something, or suddenly begin to
                                        understand it.
-          I'm sorry, I didn't realize who you were.
2.passenger                  = someone who is travelling in a vehicle, plane, boat etc, but is
                                       not driving it or working on it.
-          The company can't afford to carry any passengers.
3.concerned                 = worried.
            -    All the people concerned with children's education.
4.slightly                     = a little.
            -    He was someone I already knew slightly.
5.hemisphere   = a half of the earth.
            - the Northern hemisphere.
6.spokesman    = a man who has been chosen to speak officially for a group,
   organization, or government.
- A White House spokesman said that we should keep the peace.
7.drawbacks                = disadvantage
            - It's a great city - the only drawback is the weather.
8.nursery school          = a school for children who are between three and five years old
            - Every Tuesday I bring my brother to nursery school.


Unit 4
1.Claim                        = to ‘order’ sth free-of-charge,because it belongs to you.
- john rejected claims that he had acted irresponsibly.
2.bargain                     = a good offer.
            - There are no bargains in the clothes shops at the moment.
3. crowd                      = a large group of people who have gathered together to do something.
            - There were crowds of shoppers in the street.
4.queue                        = to form or join a line of people or vehicles waiting to do something
                                       or go somewhere
            - We had to queue up for ages to get served.

Unit 5
1.fascinating                = extremely interesting.
            - My father gave me a fascinating book as a birthday gift.
2. plenty                      = a large quantity that is enough or more than enough.
            - Make sure she gets plenty of fresh air.
3.preserve                    = keep it alive.
            - We must encourage the planting of new trees and preserve our existing woodlands.
4.path                          = a track that has been made deliberately or made by many
                                       people walking over the same ground.
            - Follow the path along the river to the bridge.
5.quite             = very, but not extremely.
            - He's quite a good soccer player.

Unit 6
1.explode                    = to burst with a loud noise.
            - The device was thrown at an army patrol but failed to explode.
2.tied up                      = to fasten something together, using string, rope.
            - He tied up all the old newspapers.
3.advice                       = an opinion you give someone about what they should do.
            - Could you give me some advice about buying a home?
